About the Department of Botany
Department of Botany started functioning in the year 1965 and the UG Course was started in 1968. The department has four faculty members. It has well equipped laboratories, and a well-arranged department book bank for enhancing students’ quench for science. A local herbarium prepared by students comprising various families based on their syllabus is maintained in the department. An Eco- Museum with rare exhibits of specimens, models, charts, permanent slides etc. is another attraction with a unique economic botany specimens wing. The department also has a well-maintained botanical garden, Medicinal plant garden and an organic vegetable farm. The department produces consistent and excellent results each year and progression rate are relatively high.
The department publishes manuscript magazine, wall magazine and a monthly newsletter, “Evergreen”. Value added and various soft skill development courses are also offered here, which include Horticultural skills, Mushroom cultivation, Ornament making, fabric painting etc. Workshops and seminars are being conducted regularly. Weak students are properly mentored and are given remedial measures through student support programmes, peer teaching initiatives etc. Various Environmental Awareness programmes including extension programmes are being conducted by the department during every academic year and thereby encouraging the students to respect mother nature and to adopt an ecofriendly lifestyle.
